Sleep

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute website tells us that:

“Insomnia is a common sleep disorder. People who have insomnia have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. As a result, they may get too little sleep or have poor-quality sleep. They may not feel refreshed when they wake up.”

It is estimated that one out of ten adults suffer from chronic insomnia which can have a detrimental effect on their ability to function effectively during their day.  Sometimes the insomnia sufferer will be prescribed a short-term sleeping aid but only if the insomnia is caused by a temporary situation such as a traumatic experience.

With sleep problems being so common it is no surprise that people spend much time and money trying to learn better ways to deal with the frustration of insomnia.  Sleep depravation can be one of the most stressful conditions we can experience, just ask the parents of a newborn.

Once we determine why we are having so many sleep problems, we can figure out the best way to break the sleepless cycle.

The author of Healing Night: The Science and Spirit of Sleeping wrote that:

“We live in a world that is accelerating. Everyone around us is going fast. They are speeding, there is nothing wrong with going fast. But you can’t relax in a hurry”

Here are some suggestions for healthier ways to deal with sleeplessness:

  • Prepare Your Sleeping Space

Sometimes the temperature of your room is not optimal for sleeping (between 65 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit).  Comfort is another reason our sleep can be disturbed.  Try using a special pillow or a sleep mask to increase comfort and boost relaxation.  You may have heard it said before, and the advice remains good today, remove the TV from the bedroom.  Try to condition yourself to see the bedroom as a place for rest, relaxation and sleep.

  • Establish A Bedtime Ritual

When it comes to falling asleep, preparing for bed in a routine manner every night can be very helpful once that routine is firmly established. Many people highly recommend the use of a sleep machine such as the Verilux Rise & Shine Natural Sleep System to help you fall asleep.  It promises that it “helps you regain and maintain your body’s natural Circadian balance through the countless demands of daily life.
