Benefits of Infrared Saunas

What is infrared heat?

far-infrared-resonanceFar infrared is part of the spectrum of light emanating from the sun. Far infrared is not visible to the eye, but you feel it as heat penetrating into your skin. You may be familiar with the infrared heat lamps sometimes used in bathrooms. Far infrared produces heat in a similar fashion, but is much more efficient because it penetrates even deeper into the skin.

Infrared saunas offer more therapeutic benefits than traditional heat saunas. Infrared light, the invisible part of the sun’s spectrum, penetrates the body rather than simply heating the air. The resulting increase in core body temperature stimulates detoxification, circulation and ant-inflammatory processes.

Far Infrared Sauna vs. Conventional Sauna

A study analyzing the chemical composition of sweat found that the sweat of participants using the box of hot rocks sauna had 95-97% water, while the sweat of those using an infrared sauna was 80-85% water–the rest being composed of cholesterol, fat-soluble toxins, heavy metals (such as mercury and cadmium), sulfuric acid, ammonia, sodium, and uric acid.

Detoxification therapy is also useful for those suffering from immune system problems that include chronic fatigue syndrome, environmental illness/multiple chemical sensitivity, and fibromyalgia.

Infrared saunas increases metabolism

Looking for a quick and easy way to increase metabolism? When you increase your core body temperature, you increase your metabolism. An infrared sauna session raises your body temperature 2-3 degrees, depending on the quality of the infrared heat.  Not only will you be increasing your metabolism, you will also be detoxifying your body of toxic chemicals and substances such as lead, zinc, nickel and mercury that have been absorbed, inhaled or ingested into your body.  Try sweating away that waist line by relaxing with far infrared sauna therapy.

Toxin and heavy metal detoxification

Sweating is good for you. Sweating is one of the body’s safest and most natural ways to heal and maintain good health. The practice of using sweat therapy for physical wellness dates over 4,000 years ago when American Indians began using sweat lodges.

Whether we know it or not, we are exposed to heavy metals on an almost daily basis, and left undisturbed, these heavy metals can cause illnesses. We are commonly exposed to heavy metals like cadmium, lead, and mercury through pollution and just as a matter of modern life.

Heavy metals that often accumulate in toxic levels such as lead, cadmium, copper, manganese and nickel have been shown to detox with sweat. Toxic chemicals from our environment, such as pesticides and phthalates, can also be excreted through the body via sweat. An important factor, however, is how you are sweating.

Support chronic pain Relief and muscle flexibility

Infrared wavelengths penetrate the body to create heat, which creates profound therapeutic benefits. They increase blood flow to the muscles, delivering more concentrated oxygen, which creates more energy to heal.

Infrared sauna treatments are shown to alleviate inflammation and reduce swelling, and are helpful for:

  • sports injury
  • chronic fatigue syndrome
  • fibromyalgia
  • arthritis

Additionally, due to increased blood flow to muscles, stretching in a sauna has been shown to increase flexibility by threefold.

Improves Skin Health

The near-infrared light is specifically associated with improved skin health.  Near-infrared light has been shown to:

  • Improve firmness and elasticity, due to the increased blood circulation
  • Speed wound healing
  • Reduce cellulite

Normalizes blood pressure

Sweating during sauna therapy increases blood flow, leading to improved circulation. Infrared sauna therapy not only improves blood pressure, it can dramatically support heart health.

A 2008 Japanese study concluded that far-infrared sauna therapy improves cardiac function and decreases cardiac size in chronic heart failure patients.
