What it is

Magnet therapy has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years to treat a variety of diseases and conditions. It is thought that abnormal magnetic fields in the body result in certain disease states and that magnets may play a role in restoring these magnetic fields to normal functioning again.

Proponents of magnet therapy say that magnetic fields produced from the negative pole of the magnet can help stimulate metabolism, increase the amount of oxygen available to cells, and create a less acidic environment within the body.

How it’s Done

Magnet therapy places magnets of varying strengths and sizes on the body as a natural method to relieve pain, restore energy and enhance sleep. It has proven to be a safe, economical, and effective alternative medicine therapy.

Western medicine became interested in magnet therapy because of the variety of electromagnetic fields that naturally occur within the body. Nervous system communications and related muscle contractions are associated with magnetic activity, and the heart generates the largest magnetic field in the body.

Proof and Promise

People wear magnets to treat painful conditions as well as for treating water retention, insomnia, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), cancer, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease, and many other conditions.

In one tightly controlled study Thomas Skalak of the University of Virginia found that static magnets reduced swelling by up to 50 percent in the hind paws of rats. Skalak published his results in the November 2008 issue of the American Journal of Physiology.  A 1997 study at Baylor College of Medicine published a report that 76% of patients treated reported a decrease in arthritic joint and muscle pain.

Many research studies have been conducted on magnet therapy with varied results. According to WebMD, magnet therapy has been shown to be especially effective in treating nerve pain caused by diabetic neuropathy and osteoarthritis.

There are several different kinds of products used in magnet therapy, including braceletspendants and even mattress pads. Click on any of the links in this article to find out more.
